Chapter 28

Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

​Prince Sayeed bin Mahmood al Saud sat behind a large desk made of African Teak with gold inlays in his expansive office on the third floor of his palace, a telephone handset pressed to his ear, “what is the status of our people in Italy?”

​“I spoke with Barak, at first he said that the two cousins had no knowledge of anything other than the weapons at the warehouse, meetings at the mosque and the three targets that they themselves had researched. After I pressed him hard, as you suggested, he remembered that Hafaz had accompanied him to the meeting with the criminals in Reggio Calabria as a translator.”

​Sayeed cursed.

​“He and Zaheer are working with one of Salim’s aides to find a new safe place to operate from, they understand that the farm is no longer safe, but they want to wait one more day. The rest of the fertilizer is due for delivery in the morning.”

​Sayeed considered this and a moment later said, “I agree it is a risk worth taking to get the rest of the ammonium nitrate, but they must relocate as soon as they have it in their possession. The Carabinieri will waste no time raiding the criminals who will have no qualms selling us out to save their infidel skins.”

​“I agree,” Omar Quasaam replied from his office in Tripoli.

​“What word of the rest of the men?”

​“The first wave has arrived in Italy, they passed through without issue and are in the safe house in Venice.”

​“And the others?”

​“Six teams are arriving today, three by train from Nice and three by ferry from Greece like the first group. They will eventually all make their way to the building we leased in Rome.”

​“Should we send Zaheer and Fazilli to Rome?” Sayeed asked.

​“That would be unwise, it is a residential building in a busy area of the city, bringing in large drums of fuel and pallets of fertilizer could very easily draw unwanted attention.”

​Sayeed knew this, they had discussed these same issues previously, “very well, can we lease a warehouse in Rome or Florence?”

​“Zaheer feels it would be better to find a location in the south, away from the bigger cities. He points out that the south of Italy is more under the control of the Mafia than the federal government.”

​“Yes, but do we not already fear that the criminals will report us to the authorities?”

​“They may well give the location of the farm to the police, however, if we secure a site ourselves via Salim’s people, when the police raid the farm our people and materials will have already been moved. The criminals will not help the police beyond the access to the farm, of that Zaheer is certain.”

​Sayeed sighed, an audible expression of his frustration. “Does Salim understand the urgency?”

​“Yes, he has his man working feverishly to secure another location. He reports that the other vehicles have been acquired and are waiting for the signal to proceed to wherever Zaheer ends up with the explosives. Once that happens, Zaheer says it will take several days to prepare the vehicles for the attack.
